Label TextBorn in 1901, Carlsen's son Dines became a favorite subject for the artist, whose portrait work was generally confined to family members. The series of "Dines Carlsen" portraits began when he was still a boy; two were shown in Academy exhibitions of 1912 and 1915. This portrait, probably painted after Dines's 1922 election as an Associate, is quite similar to another portrait which was in the Dines Carlsen Estate (Wortsman Rowe #271).
