Label TextDavis’s Self-Portrait of 1939 is definitely glamorous, revealing the artist’s beautiful features, including her high cheekbones, and luminous light eyes. Her headgear, some yardage of fabric ending in a rose-like knot at the front, echoed again in the strange, surrealist brooch - a hand holding a rose - are all posed against a rose-hued ground. It is interesting to ponder Davis’s rather personal use of the long held fascination with the rose.
