Label TextTryon's thinly painted oil sketch--evidently a gift to Kenyon Cox--is somewhat unusual in that the painter typically avoided preliminary studies, preferring to paint from memory. Even this informal work, however, exhibits Tryon's characteristic division of the picture surface into several horizontal bands of ground and sky, all kept parallel to the picture plane.
