Label TextWoodbury has chosen a dramatic viewpoint in this marine, for the roiling sea is viewed from a cliff. The thickly painted pattern of the sea foam on the surface of the water reveals the artist's interest in surface decoration as well as his close study of sea currents. Woodbury was quoted as saying , "I never paint what a wave looks like--I paint what it does" (Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Sentinel, January 7, 1946). He captures the dynamics of the movement of the water quite effectively in the surf crashing over the rocks in the middle distance.
