Label TextAn example of Bittinger's portraits of room interiors, this painting depicts the Grand Salon of the Hotel d'Orsay in Paris, built by Boucher d'Orsay, in the style of Louis XVI. The room and its contents were purchased by Senator William Andrews Clark of Montana in 1904 and installed in his Fifth Avenue, New York, mansion. In 1926, after his death, Clark's collection of European art, including the d'Orsay Salon, was donated to the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., which built its Clark Wing to accomodate it; the salon is a permanent installation in the wing.
