Label TextThe costume of the incidental figures is this landscape is difficult to identify, however, the girl's blouse and veil suggest a more European than American mode of dress. Therefore, it is possible that the figure group is based on Bellow's European experience. The landscape itself seems derived from sketching trips in New England, which the artist made in the late 1850s, as was noted in "Domestic Art Gossip" in the November 1858 issue of The Crayon: "Bellows has been procuring material in Vermont, among the green mountains, not far from the village of Bellows Falls. His sketches represent picturesque old houses and mills, demonstrating the fact that picturesque buildings do exist in some regions; he also shows us transcripts of beautiful passages of brook scenery, many fine old ash trees, and mountain background."
