Label TextThis portrait deteriorated over the years and was substantially restored by Eliot Clark in 1962.
Ames' NA diploma presentation, described in minutes only as "a representative example of his work," was accepted by the Council May 8, 1871. Number 197 in the 1911 checklist of the Academy collection is Twilight by Ames, suggesting a landscape subject which would be entirely unrepresentative of his work, and a confusion of identities over the intervening forty years. At the time of the 1949 inventory of the collection, this item is noted as "missing."
