Label TextThe source of this portrait remains enigmatic. White's diploma portrait was a self-portrait and remains in the Academy's collection. The first record of Spencer's portrait of White is in the catalogue of the Academy's twenty-third annual exhibition. Lacking further documentation, it seems most likely that his portrait was either a gift of the artist or the sitter.
