Label TextAccording to the artist's son, this painting was executed for the Academy shortly after the Nichols family home and the artist's studio in Kent, Connecticut, were destroyed by fire. All of Nichols' paintings in the house and studio were lost. The figures in the painting represent the artist and his wife.
