Label TextThe subject of Anne Hathaway, William Shakespeare's wife, occupied Perry immediately after his return from Europe in 1874. In addition to this painting, he executed "He's Coming-Annie Hathaway" and a watercolor, "Annie Hathaway's Kitchen." Here he depicts Hathaway absorbed in her writing. Perry's primary attention is devoted to the painting of the still life elements, such as the flowers and candlesticks, which surround her. The painter John Ferguson Weir commended Perry's genre paintings for their "poetry of feeling" and "delicacy of expression."
