Label TextA short article in the New York Post of 29 December 1866 mentions a new painting by Perry: "a Dutch oven, out of doors, with an old woman and child busy at the mouth of it." While Perry's diploma picture lacks a child to accompany the woman, it can be seen as belonging to the large group of his depictions of rural labor. The shadow cast by the roof renders the working woman anonymous, however Perry has indulged in pleasing effects of sunlight and shadow on the oven's plaster wall.
