Label TextInspired by the grand sky effects of the seventeenth-century Dutch masters, German realist Andreas Achenbach's powerful seascapes were derived from sketches that he made on site. Achenbach's prominence in the art community of Düsseldorf attracted the attention and emulation of many aspiring landscape painters. Exhibited in New York in 1860-1861 when Suydam likely saw and purchased the work, Off Ostend depicts the struggle for survival of a Belgian fishing community on the North Sea.
