Label TextSaintin entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1845. His teachers were Michel-Martin Drolling, Achille Jean-Baptiste Leboucher, and Edouard Picto. He came to America in the mid-1850s, settling in New York. For the approximately ten years Saintin was in America, he remained close to New York. He contributed to Academy annual exhibitions each year from 1857 through 1863. The small oil study in the Academy's collection makes it clear Saintin was in Italy for part of 1864. The following year he participated in an Academy annual with a portrait of an unidentified subject. Upon the artist's death 1894, he bequeathed this painting to the Academy.
