Label TextGertrude Fiske was born into a wealthy and socially prominent family that traced its ancestry to the colonial Massachusetts governor William Bradford. She studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, for six years under Frank Benson, Philip Leslie Hale, and Edmund Tarbell. Fiske spent summers in Ogunquit, Maine, studying with Charles H. Woodbury, the teacher who perhaps had the strongest influence on her work.Fiske won numerous awards throughout her career and in 1916 she had a solo exhibition at the Guild of Boston Artists, of which she was a founding member. While commissioned portraits comprised Fiske's mainstay, her subjects included figure studies in both indoor and outdoor settings, landscapes, beach scenes, amusement parks, and the occasional still life. This "Self-Portrait" was submitted by the artist as her Associate's diploma presentation and shows her in her studio with palette in hand.
