Label TextLike Rembrandt, one of the artists he most revered, Raphael Soyer from youth through old age, regularly took stock of himself in the execution of self-portraits. The wistfulness of portraits done in his student days is long gone in this image taken in middle-age, and well after he had attained a highly successful career, yet--in a departure from Rembrandt's self-image at a similar point--he shows himself without a trace of vanity. Soyer was in Los Angles in 1985, at the same time the Academy's exhibition of a selection of its artists' portraits was being presented at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He hastened to write to report on the general good effect of the show, and added: "It gave me pleasure to see again my self-portrait of 40 years ago. Much to my satisfaction it hangs next to Edwin Dickinson's [self-portrait]."
