Label TextOne of several tropical views Church painted shortly after returning from his first voyage to South America, Scene among the Andes is less exuberant and more conventional in color, composition, and handling than most of his larger Andes landscapes. It is likely that James A. Suydum acquired "Scene on the Magdalene" directly from the Academy annual exhibition of 1855 or very shortly thereafter.
