Label TextThe identification of the site as the coast of Marblehead, Massachusetts is questionable. The scene seems highly reminiscent of the coastline of Cornwall in England, where Dix often worked. The artist is not known to have returned to American after 1865, when he began to divide his time living mostly in Rome or London, though he certainly may have. It is also possible that he based the painting on much earlier sketches.
