Label TextLang was particularly known for his paintings of woman and children. "The Fainting Spell" is typical of his oeuvre. Lang's depiction of a listless young woman in this composition adopts the popular Victorian theme of feminine vulnerability and underscores the sentimentalism found in James A. Suydam's genre painting collection, which he bequeathed to The National Academy.
