Label TextThe sculptor turns to his left to face the viewer in this half-length portrait. He has a moustache and wears a hat and jacket. As stated above, MacMonnies turned to painting as the result of a nervous breakdown around 1900. It might be assumed, therefore, that this work dates from between that year and 1902, the year it was accepted by the Academy as MacMonnies diploma portrait. If this is true, however, the artist has chosen to depict himself as somewhat younger than he actually was at the time.
