Label TextIn April 1895 Mrs. James K. Warren commissioned Huntington to paint a portrait of her late husband for $800. She intended to present it to the Metropolitan Club of Washington, D.C., of which Warren may have been a member. Huntington followed his usual practice of using a photograph as the basis for a posthumous portrait. The gap of four years between commission and completion, unusually long for Huntington, may be explained by a disagreement between Mrs. Warren and the club, which has no record of ever having owned the portrait. The portrait probably remained in Warren's family, eventually to be disposed of by donation to the Academy, with which Warren had no connection.
