Label TextLike many of Kensett's early landscapes this painting testifies to his study of Old Master paintings, notably the landscapes of Claude Lorrain. It appears to be a composed landscape, intentionally avoiding specific asssociations to particular place and time. The small figures of a shepherd and his flock, as in European models provide a point of interest as well as underscore the pastoral feeling of the scene.
