Label TextElizabeth King’s What Happened is a stop-action animation that King produced in collaboration with director Richard Kizu-Blair. Originally shot and edited in 1991 at Colossal Pictures in San Francisco, King was invited to work with Blair and his producer Christine Whitney to make a film based on one of her sculptures called Pupil. What Happened explores Pupil’s potential for gesture and expression. The figurative wooden sculpture’s movements emulate a sense of discovery somewhere between the body and technology, and the technological supports in between. Of the collaborative shoot, King describes the outcome as an exploration of “what does the body involuntarily do when the mind is in motion?”
