Label TextSarah Frothingham’s portrait, painted by her father James Frothingham in 1846, is one of the earliest of a woman artist to be presented for membership in the National Academy. It is simple and conventional in accordance with its time, but the sensitive rendering of the young artist’s expression in her direct engagement with the viewer give it something more. Compare this to Cecilia Beaux’s beautiful Self-Portrait (to the right), painted in 1894, where the young artist portrays herself stunningly, with bright color and vibrant energy.Collections
