Label TextA Southerner by birth and a steadfast champion of the disenfranchised he saw there, Robert Gwathmey depicted scenes of African-American Southern life with great sensitivity. He was an outspoken critic of social injustice and incorporated a brightly colored geometric style as a way of elevating his subjects, which ranged from share croppers and migrant workers to fishermen.
