Label TextLockwood exhibited a number of works with the title "Peonies" at the National Academy (Winter, 1910, no. 301; Winter, 1911, no. 205; Annual, 1912, no. 4; Winter, 1912, no. 371; Winter, 1913, no. 310). Any of these could by the work which the artist presented to the Academy in 1913.Lockwood cultivated peonies in his garden in South Orleans, Cape Cod, and by 1895, he featured the blossom almost exclusively in his still life paintings. Set against a green background, the petals of the pink and yellow flowers in "Peonies" are in varying states of bloom. One still sees traces of La Farge's influence here, for Lockwood, like his teacher, does not offer a botanical description of the flower, favoring a broadly and quickly suggested rendition. His use of pastel-like effects and soft illumination disclose the tender fragility of the exotic blossoms.
