Laura Shechter, nee Goldstein, graduated cum laude with a B.A. in Fine Arts from Brooklyn College in 1965. She won a number of scholarships during her student years and, in 1981-82, received a CAPS Grant from the New York State Council on the Arts.

She has had a number of solo exhibitions in New York at Lacarda Gallery (1972), Forum Gallery (various), the Nicholas Roerich Museum (1981),Robert Schoelkopf Gallery (1985), and Katharina Rich Perlow Gallery (1992 and 1994). Her work has also been featured at Capricorn Gallery, Boston (1981 and 1996), the Greenville (South Carolina) County Museum (1982), Rahr West Art Museum, Manitowoc, Wisconsin (1991), Sinclair Community College, Dayton, Ohio (1995), and the Pucker Gallery, Boston (1996).

She has served on the faculties of Parsons School of Design, New York (1984), and at the National Academy's school (1994-present). She considers herself to be a perceptualist artist and specializes in the painting of still-lifes. She is represented by the Katharina Rich Perlow Gallery, and resides in Brooklyn.
