1869 - 1948
Charles was the younger brother of the artist Maurice Prendergast. Charles studied at the Rice Grammar School in Boston and upon graduation worked at Doll and Richards Fine Arts Shop as an errand boy. Later he studied at the Academie Colarossi in Paris and in Venice.
He began as a craftsman making picture frames using incised gesso and gold leaf methods of decoration. About 1904 he went into business as a frame maker with H.D. Murphy. In 1910 he began making art utilizing Byzantaine and medieval techniques and materials.
He lived with his brother Maurice in Boston until 1914 when they moved to New York. Upon Maurice's death in 1924, Charles travelled to France where he met and married Eugenie Van Kammel in 1925.
