Nichols was the son of Hobart Nichols, PNA. He studied at the Corcoran Art School with Howard Helmick and at the Art Students League in Washington, DC. In 1911 he married Helen Agnes Mather.

Nichols was an illustrator, portrait painter and muralist. He taught illustration at the Art Students League and was director of Art at the Marot Jr. College in Thompson, CN (1934-41). He painted 300 portraits of historical characters for the National Museum in Washington and murals for high schools in New York City, Kent, CN. and Litchfield, CN. He also illustrated the work of Alfred Noyes.

A retrospective of his work was held at the Fairfield (Connecticut) Public Library in January 1971.
