Hobart Nichols was educated at Shortledge College in Pennsylvania and then worked for the US Geological (ABG: pls check with her on this) Survey until 1907. During this period he studied at the Washington, DC Art Students League under Howard Helmick and in 1890 he went to Europe and studied at the Academie Julian and in the studio of the Spanish painter Castellucho. In 1895 he married Wilhelmina Von Stosch, also a painter. He was appointed Assistant Director of Fine Arts on the US Commission to the Paris Exposition of 1900. After he resigned from the Geographic (?) Survey he went again to Paris for further study and then returned to establish himself in New York City, summering in Gloucester, Massachusetts.
He served as President of the National Academy 1939-1949, succeeding Jonas Lie. He served as an officer of the Academy since 1926. There was an exhibition of his paintings, drypoints and drawings at the Corcoran Gallery in 1940.
