John Bower was born in Philadelphia in 1930, to architect John A. Bower, Sr. He earned a bachelor of architecture from Ohio State University in 1951, while also attending Pennsylvania State University in 1948 and University of Pennsylvania in 1953 for additional courses. He was a senior designer for Vincent G. Kling from 1955-1961 before going off on his own. He joined the AIA in 1968 and was an elected fellow for the Philadelphia chapter in 1975.
