Gahman was raised on a farm in Allen, Indiana, to which his family moved in 1900. He studied at Valparaiso (Indiana) University, and attained his Master of Arts in fine arts degree at Columbia University in New York. Gahman also studied art with Hobart Nichols and with Henry Varnum Poor. He was a combat pilot during World War I, and again served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. From the 1950s to his retirement Gahman was an assistant professor of fine arts at Pennsylvania State University Center, Ogontz.
