Barbara Lekberg was born in Portland, Oregon and grew up in the Middle West. She studied at the University of Iowa with Humbert Albrizio and received a B.F.A. degree there in 1946 and an M.F.A. in 1947. Her bronze and steel sculpture, which is often based on the figure in motion, has been widely exhibited. Among her solo exhibitions was a major retrospective at Mount Holyoke College during her stay there as visiting artist in 1977-79. Her sixth solo exhibition at the Sculpture Center Gallery in New York was in 1983.
Lekberg's sculpture has been included in group exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Her work is also in the General Electric collection and in other corporate and private collections in the U.S., Canada, Bermuda, Brazil, and Sweden.
Among her commissioned sculptures are interior works done for the Beldon-Stratford Hotel, Chicago, in 1953, and for Socony Mobil Company, New York, in 1955; a relief for the lobby of Riedl and Freede Advertising, Clifton, New Jersey, of 1964; a figure of Orpheus for Simpson College, Iowa, of 1984; and a figural piece for Trafalgar House Realty, New York, of 1986. She has taught at the College of New Rochelle and the Philadelphia College of Art and is now a member of the faculty at the National Academy of Design School.
