Paul Broches’ approach to architecture is grounded in a dedication to craft and architecture as a social art. He studied architecture at Columbia University with Mitchell Giurgola founder Romaldo Giurgola, where he was influenced by Aldo’s ability to balance accomplishment with great modesty and generosity of spirit. At MG, Broches has established a collaborative, inclusive work style, creating welcoming spaces, sense of place and a strong connection to context. He has a particular interest in collaborations with artists to enrich designs and user experience.
Paul Broches joined Mitchell Giurgola in 1971 and became a partner in 1980. His work at the firm includes projects for the Brooklyn and New York Public Libraries, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Rockefeller University, City University of New York, NYU, Cornell University, and the NYC School Construction Authority. He had the rare privilege of leading the team that realized the last project designed by Louis Kahn, the FDR Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island.
Broches is a Fellow in the AIA and member of the Board of the International Architects Designers and Planners for Social Responsibility. He also serves as a critic on the international Berkeley Prize for architectural writing and Columbia University’s annual GSAPP Goodman Fellowship Jury.
