Richard Miller studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art before and after World War II, during which he served in the armed forces. He lived and worked in Ohio until 1962 when he moved to New York to devote all of his time to sculpture. He has had a particular interest in figural sculpture and, in 1971, published a book on the subject, Figure Sculpture in Wax and Plaster (New York: Watson-Guptill). He is represented in the collections of Butler Institute of American Art, the Canton (Ohio) Art Institute, the Joseph H. Hirshhorn Museum, the University of Houston, and the University of Nebraska, among others. He began teaching at Queens College of the City University of New York in 1967 and is a member of the Sculptors' Guild, the Alliance of Figurative Artists, and Artists Equity. Among several major awards won by Miller are the National Academy's Elizabeth Watrous Gold Medal presented to him in 1974 for Diane: Sitting (cat. no. S-2); the NAD Gold Medal of 1981 for The Space Walker; and the Artists Fund Award 0f 1984 for Tetraclade.
