David ReedNA 2009American, b. 1946

David Reed’s paintings of large, swirling brushstrokes incorporate the fluidity of paint with the dynamic elements of light and color. His compositions are formed using various shapes and lines, incorporating an expressive application of paint similar to works by Cy Twombly. Inspired by light and its evolution as a motif, the artist creates several fields of color, allowing them to take on photographic qualities such as superimposition and transparency.

Reed was born in 1946 in San Diego, California. He attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, MA before receiving his BA from Reed College in Portland, OR. He would later move to New York, where he studied at the New York Studio School, attending a seminar led by Philip Guston.

Reed is the recipient of numerous awards, including the National Endowment for the Arts, John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, and Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship. The artist currently lives and works in New York, NY.
