Ullberg studied at the Swedish State School of Art in Stockholm and at museums in France, the Netherlands and Germany. He lived for seven years in Botswana where he was curator of the Botswana National Museum and Art Gallery. Examples of his sculpture are included in many public and corporate collections and several of his monumental sculptures are in Corpus Christi, Texas. He now resides on Padre Island, Texas.

He is a member of the National Sculpture Society, the Society of Animal Artists, and the American Society of Marine Artists. He won the Barnett Prize at the National Academy in 1975 and the Ellen P. Seyer Prize in 1985. The National Sculpture Society's 1983 Gold Medal is among his many other awards.
