for Louis Joseph Kaep
1903 - 1991
Kaep studied at St. Mary's and Loras colleges, Dubuque, Iowa; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Summer School of Painting, Bailey's Harbor, Wisconsin; and the Academie Julian in Paris. Among his teachers were Fredrick V. Poole, Karl Buehr, Wellington Reynolds, Charles Wilimousky, and Elmer Forsberg. Kaep specialized in watercolor and was best known for his images of the American landscape in that medium.
Following his student years, he moved to New York where he became an art director for Montgomery Ward, the Vogue Wright Studios, and the Electrographic Corporation. He later became president and vice-chairman of the board of the last organization.
He received numerous awards including a Gold Medal for Watercolor from the Hudson Valley Art Association; a Bainbridge Award from the Allied Artists of America; and a First Award for Watercolor from the American Artists Professional League. He was a member of the Salmagundi Club, and the American Watercolor Society, and the Royal Society of Arts, England.
