for Thomas Allen
American, 1849 - 1924
Although born in St. Louis MO in 1849, Thomas Allen attended high school in Pittsfield MA. He returned to St. Louis to study at Washington University, leaving in 1869 on an expedition to the Rocky Mountains with Professor J.W. Pattison. His sketching on this trip encouraged him to become an artist, and in 1871 he sailed for Europe. Allen spent five years at the Royal Academy in Düsseldorf where he studied with Eugen Dücker, Andreas Achenbach, and Carl Müller. The next five years were apparently spent in France (Paris and Ecouen), Pittsfield, and Texas. He finally settled in Boston in 1883 and was elected an associate member of the National Academy the following year.
In addition to his landscape interests, Allen collected Asian art and ran several businesses, ultimately becoming quite wealthy. He served as president and trustee of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and was honored there with a retrospective two years after his death in Worcester MA in 1924.
