for William Van Alen
1882 - 1954
Van Alen attended the Pratt Institute and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. On his return from Paris he went into partnership with H. Craig Severance. His Albemarle Building (1912) was one of the first skyscrapers built without cornices. His most famous building was the Chrysler Building (1929) (ABG: not sure I read date correctly). He early favored construction with steel instead of masonry. He was married to Elizabeth Bloodgood.
