for Ernest Nathaniel Townsend
1893 - 1945
Ernest N. Townsend, a landscapist, muralist, book designer, and illustrator, studied in New York at the Mechanics Institute, the Art Students League (1927-28), and the National Academy of Design (1911-14). His first appearance in an Academy exhibition was in the winter exhibition of 1927, when he showed three graphic works that were vignettes from the world of opera. Since Academy exhibitions rarely included prints until the mid-1940s, Townsend was regularly represented by his paintings, in which his favored subjects were coastal scenes. An exhibition of his work held at the Binghamton (N.Y.) Museum of Fine Arts in 1941 featured views of the northern coast of Maine and Nova Scotia.
Among the books Townsend illustrated were James Hilton's novel Good-bye, Mr. Chips, a 1936 edition of Izaak Walton's Compleat Angler, and The American Scene.
