Partridge became interested in etching during his youth. He began his formal studies at the National Academy of Design in 1909; from 1911 to 1915 he traveled in Europe and began concentrated work as an etcher. After moving to San Francisco in 1917, he married the photographer Imogen Cunningham from whom he was divorced in 1934. Partridge began teaching art at Mills College, Oakland, in 1920, and within three years was named chairman of its art department. Recognition for his etchings and drawings of landscapes came early; his works were frequently exhibited in both the United States and Europe. Although he retired from teaching in 1946, Partridge remained active as an artist throughout his life.
