Jack Levine studied privately with Dr. Denman W. Ross beginning in the late 1920s and with Harold Zimmerman.

At the National Academy he won the Altman Prize in 1975 and the Obrig Prize in 1981. Among his other honors are a Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship in 1945-1946; a grant from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the National Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters; and an Honorary Ph.D. from Colby College, Waterville, Maine. He has lectured at the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Maine. He resides in New York City [married to Ruth Gikow]
