Rouland spent four years studying abroad, first in Weimar with Fritjhof Schmidt and Max Thedy, in Paris at the Academie Julien under Laurens and Constant, and Later in Italy.
Rouland spent five saesons painting commissioned portraits in London. The first season he painted in the studio of Sir Alfred East and the second in that of Sir Hubert Herkomer.
Rouland exhibited his portraits at Calusen Galleries (1907), and at the Art Center Galleries (1923). He also showed the portraits he did of his lifelong friend John Burroughs, the naturalist and humanist, in a memorial exhibition at Ehrich Galleries, all in New York.
In addition to portraits, Rouland painted landscapes at Marblehead, MA, where he had s summer home, and cityscapes of New York where he maintained a studio.
Rouland was married to Minnie Dwight. He was a member of the American Artists Professional League, Allied Artists of America and the Salmagundi Club. He was proposed to the NAD by Guy Wiggins.
