Label TextIn 1884 Edgar Ward became the second artist to be employed by the Academy as an instructor in its school. He was Lemuel Wilmarth's assistant in directing the school until Wilmarth's retirement in 1889, when Ward became director, a post he held to 1909. Though Beline was essentially a painter, he is known to have created some sculptures early in his career. It is not unlikely he would have chosen the distinguished, nearly-historic principal of the Academy School as a subject, or that might have left the work behind with the Academy as a gesture of respect for the retiring Ward.
