Label TextVan Auken was the only pupil of the Spanish sculptor Mateo Hernandez, and learned from him to cut stone and wood directly from life, without making any preliminary model or sketches. Her Christ the King adorns the high altar at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Animals are the subjects of much of her sculpture. One of her most best-known works is Giant Turtle, installed in Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia.n.d.
