Label TextAbstract painter Robert Reed was born in Charlottesville, Virginia and studied first at Morgan State University, Baltimore, before continuing on at Yale, where he received his BFA in 1960 and his MFA in the 1962. Reed works within a language of abstraction that is part architectonically-based and part chromatically-based to create a complex iconography. For the artist these compositions can be understood as personal ideograms and the title of this painting "C'ville" is a reference to the artist's hometown. He has stated that painting "is a way for me to document experiences, thoughts, objects, places, and people, both in the past and the future." Reed currently teaches painting at Yale and in 2001 and his work was the subject of a solo exhibition, "Galactic Journal: Recent Paintings and Collages by Robert Reed" at the University of Virginia.
