Label TextIn presenting his portrait to the Council, James Nicoll made the point that it was "submitted not merely to replace the portrait previously accepted to qualify me as an Associate, but more especially as a worthy example of the careful, conscientious work of a valued Academician in his seventy-eighth year." Although Guy's portrait of him assumed the place of Nicoll's diploma presentation, he did not reclaim from the collection the portrait by James Beard that had secured his election as an Associate in 1881.Nicoll lent an unidentified portrait by Guy to the Academy's autumn 1888 exhibition, and he lent another portrait of himself by Guy to the 1897 annual. This suggests a long association between the two artists.
