Label TextJames Suydam possessed two works by Guillemin, this and a small watercolor painting of a similar composition, The Pet Child. Guillemin was represented in several American collections of the period, among them that of August Belmont, but seems not to have been widely patronized. Goupil's Gallery in New York had several of his works for sale in the mid-1850s and is possibly the agent through which Suydam acquired his examples.
