Label TextSusan Rothenberg came to prominence in the early 1970s with large acrylic figurative paintings and became best known for a series of life-sized images of horses. By the mid-1970s she was a leader among the so-called "New Image" painters. Rothenberg began making prints in the late 1970s and by the early 1980s was working with images of the human figure. "Spinning" comes from a group of prints that the artist created in the mid-1980s in which she began to emphasize the atmospheric surroundings of the figure. The figure and ground become blurred, and as the artist commented, "I've always thought the ground could never be left alone; it had to be activated."
