Label TextIn 1895 Watrous complied with Academy rules by submitting a portrait of himself by then-president Thomas W. Wood, thus qualifying as an associate member. Twenty years later he wrote the Council to request permission to exchange the Wood portrait with one painted by Gordigiani, adding, "[T]hese portraits were painted about the same time." This suggests that the portrait was executed during the artist's first trip to New York, around 1895. The exchange was approved and took place in November of the same year.
